Who We Are
Makwarela Society for The Aged is a non-profit organization based in Makwarela Location, Thulamela Municipality, in the Vhembe District of Limpopo Province, South Africa. We are dedicated to improving the lives of the elderly in our community.
We envision a society where older individuals are respected, valued, and have access to the resources they need to live fulfilling lives. We strive to create a community that celebrates diversity and fosters social inclusion.
Our mission is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for the aged. We aim to provide recreational facilities, organize social trips, offer life coping skills, and restore dignity to older persons so they feel an integral part of the community. We encourage older people to use their skills fruitfully and provide nutritionally balanced meals. We also facilitate intergenerational activities to foster mutual respect and understanding.
Founded in 2005, Makwarela Society for The Aged has been serving the elderly community in Makwarela and its surrounding villages for over 18 years. Our organization was born out of a desire to provide support and care for the elderly who are often overlooked in our society. Over the years, we have grown from a small group of dedicated volunteers to a full-fledged organization with a wide range of services.
Our Services
1. Home-Based Care Our trained caregivers visit frail, bedridden and lonely elders in their homes. We help with bathing, dressing, meals, taking medication, and getting to the clinic.
2. Daily Services Open Monday–Friday across Makwarela and nearby villages. Elders enjoy a hot nutritious meal, light exercise, health checks (blood pressure, sugar testing) etc.
3. Health & Wellness Programme Free eye testing, dental days, chronic medication collection, and annual health screenings in partnership with local clinics and hospitals.
4. Caregiver & Family Support We train family members and community volunteers on how to care for frail elders safely and with respect. We also run support groups so caregivers don’t feel alone.
