Caring with Ubuntu – Every Day, Every Elder

At Makwarela Society for the Aged we believe no grandparent should ever feel alone, hungry, or forgotten. Here is exactly what we do, with love and respect, for the elders of Makwarela and surrounding villages in Limpopo.

1. Home-Based Care

For elders who are frail, bedridden or house-bound

  • Monthly visits by trained caregivers
  • Help with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene
  • Preparing and serving meals
  • Medication reminders and collection from the clinic
  • Accompanying elders to hospital or clinic appointments
  • Light housework and emotional support – a friendly face and a listening ear

2. Daily Services at Our Centre

Open Monday to Friday – the heartbeat of our work

  • A hot, nutritious meal every day
  • Health monitoring (blood pressure, glucose testing, weight checks)
  • Gentle exercise, singing, dancing, and games
  • Bible study, prayer, and traditional storytelling
  • Birthday parties with cake and gifts

3. Monthly Food Parcels & Emergency Relief

Because hunger does not wait

  • Food parcels for the poorest and most vulnerable elders
  • Winter blankets and warm clothing
  • Immediate help after fires, floods, or family crises

4. Health & Wellness Programme

Keeping our elders strong and smiling

  • Free eye testing and reading glasses
  • Dental check-ups and oral health days
  • Chronic illness support (diabetes, hypertension, HIV)
  • Annual flu vaccinations and health screening drives
  • Partnerships with local clinics and Thohoyandou hospitals

5. Caregiver Training & Family Support

Empowering families to care with confidence

  • Free training for family members and community volunteers
  • Monthly support groups for caregivers
  • Respite care so family caregivers can rest

6. Joyful Recreation & Cultural Activities

Because growing older should be fun!

  • Community gardens – elders grow their own vegetables
  • Choir, traditional dance, and drumming groups
  • Beadwork and handicraft projects
  • Inter-generational days with local schools
  • Big annual Pensioners’ Sports Day and Year-End Celebration Party

7. Advocacy & Social Grant Assistance

Making sure every elder gets what they deserve

  • Help applying for old-age grants, disability grants, and IDs
  • Follow-up visits to Home Affairs and SASSA
  • Fighting elder abuse and protecting rights

All our services are completely free to elders and their families. We are proudly funded by the Department of Social Development and by generous donours like you.

Together, we keep our elders safe, healthy, and full of joy. Want to help us do even more?
